Subject: Cypress Date Code Policy and Shelf Life Extension
Change Type: Minor
Description of Change:
Cypress announces a change to its Date Code Policy for finished goods shipment. Effective
with the release of this notice, Cypress will begin shipping finished goods material which has
been properly stored in a sealed moisture barrier bag up to 5 years after its mark date code.
Historically, Cypress’ general policy had been to ship commercial and industrial grade material
with a mark date code less than 2 years old. This was consistent with JEDEC J-STD-033D and
meant to ensure there would be no solderability or other issues with that material. Beginning in
2002, manufacturers of semiconductor integrated circuits (NEDA – the National Electronic
Distributors Association) began advocating for a change in date code policy as both field data
and internal studies showed no degradation of finished goods material when properly stored. In
the meantime, 16 of our peers have relaxed their shelf life policy beyond the JEDEC
recommendation of 2 years. This change is being done based upon extensive testing of
Cypress’ aged, finished goods (to be discussed below) and in order to be consistent with our
industry peers.
There are no changes to ordering part numbers. Product datasheets remain the same and can
be downloaded from the Cypress Website (www.cypress.com).
Benefit of Change:
This change will allow Cypress to more efficiently utilize its existing inventory as well as
enhance our ability to maintain continuity of supply on mature products without sacrificing
quality or reliability.
Part Numbers Affected:
All commercial and industrial packaged integrated circuit products offered by Cypress whose
shelf life is not governed by a pre-existing agreement will be affected by this change. Note that
